Who is On Your Team?

By Andrea Hylen

Step 4 of setting intentions after…

Choosing a few words. Making Conscious Choices. Reviewing and Staying on Track.

4. Set up a support system for success

Find an accountability buddy. Ask friends, family, peers, or colleagues to support you and see how you can support them. Join a master mind group. Hire a coach. Connect with a program that supports every baby step and giant leap.

Screen Shot 2014-10-27 at 6.57.35 AM

An accountability buddy is someone who agrees to be a “check-in” space for you, a lifeline, and who agrees to check-up on you, if they don’t hear from you. Stay connected. No hiding!

It is important to ask someone who believes in you and who will challenge you to keep going during the good times and the rough times. Usually they do this for free or as part of a barter agreement. Maybe you are their accountability buddy or you exchange an area of your expertise with them.

You may decide to pay to join a master mind group or hire a coach. A master mind group challenges you to set goals, brainstorms with you, shares information, ideas, inspiration and has regularly scheduled accountability calls or meetings. A coach can lead a group or work with you individually on your intentions and each step.

Look at your intentions for the year. Will it support you to hire a professional to advise, reflect, mentor, or even open doors to new information as you create your vision for the year? Are you willing to invest in yourself? You are worth it!

Screen Shot 2015-01-05 at 7.02.18 AM

For example, you may hire a wellness coach to support you in improving your health or a business coach to guide you in building a new business.

One tip about support. There is a difference between people supporting you and people “approving” of you. Filter through the ideas and opinions of others to find the answers that resonate with you. Which ones challenge you with excitement and an increase in energy?

Expect fear that stretches you, not paralyzes you with inaction.

My Dream Team of Support in 2015 includes:

*2 Coaches

*A Board of Directors: Executive Board, Core Board and Advisory Board

*A yearly spiritual course in a sacred on-line space that expands my mind,

*Heal My Voice book circles and member group

and a variety of friends I can reach out to for a phone call now and then, fitness teachers, and experts who I watch and listen to on social media, free teleseminars, youtube videos, newsletters, and media sources, like film, tv and radio.

Screen Shot 2015-01-05 at 7.20.09 AM

Set up your support team now and continue to review it every month. What is working? What do you need? Where do you need to make changes to stay on course with your intentions?

What does your Support Team look like this Year?

We want to hear you Voice! Post in the comments!

Are You On Track?

By Andrea Hylen

In this series of blogs about intentions, so far, we have picked a few words for the year as a guidepost of focus. We have started making conscious choices with each step we take in the direction of our words and now it is time to create a system to stay on track all year long.

Screen Shot 2015-01-04 at 7.53.13 AM

3. Create a system to see if you are on track

Setting up a weekly or monthly ritual with yourself for regular assessment and a review to check to see if you are in alignment with your intentions.

Are the choices you are making pointing you in the direction you want to go?

Make a coffee date with yourself, a walk in nature, a bubble bath to slow down and connect with yourself to discover more about who you are and where you are going with your vision for the year.

Screen Shot 2015-01-04 at 7.32.29 AM

As the New year begins and my intentions are new and fresh, I have noticed that I am making choices in slow motion. The choices and the assessment are happening moment by moment. Taking baby steps. I am exercising a new muscle of awareness. It is a practice like meditation or yoga. I ask myself questions throughout the day to assess what is happening in the moment. Even congratulating myself for going to yoga class to stretch my body or arranging a movie date for fun. Yeah me!

I know as the year begins to accelerate, there will be peak times where I may not be as conscious in the moment. To stay connected,  I mark it on my calendar as a weekly question, such as:

Are you on track?

Is this the life you want to lead?

Wealth, self-care, visibility…how are you doing?

Post the questions on your calendar or on your refrigerator or bathroom mirror that helps you make adjustments, just like the archer who has drawn back the bow and is ready to release the arrow.

Screen Shot 2015-01-04 at 7.05.00 AM

Then once a month, I make a date with myself. To spend a longer more focused time to slow down , feel the feelings, consciously readjust my arrow, plan the next steps and take inspired action.

How do you stay on track with your intentions and goals for the year?

What systems do you use for your personal life? your business?

Post in the comments. We want to hear your voice!

The Rejuvenating Power of Maverick Living By Sandy McDougall, Guest Blogger

After decades of being a responsible partner, mother, and major manager of my family household, I went on my summer 2014 Maverick Road Trip and took a 5-week long hiatus from it all. Wow! That was truly refreshing.

After much business building from my desk and office, I took the show on the road, inventing ways for my work to continue using the powers of technology and my own ingenuity. Wow! That was truly refreshing.

After many weeks experiencing summer in the suburbs, I found myself in mountains, on lakes, in the woods, by the ocean, and out traveling on the open road. Wow! That was truly refreshing.

After long months of communicating with many dear friends and family only intermittently and primarily by phone and email, I was actually in their homes re-connecting with them in person. Wow! That was truly refreshing.

After years of dreaming about combining adventure and creativity with purposeful work providing positive energy to others, my dream became reality. Wow! That was truly refreshing.

After I committed 100% to the Maverick Road Trip, any number of creative ideas came to me about how to make the experience more fun, more fruitful, more effective, and more meaningful to me and to those I met. Wow! That was truly refreshing.

Inspirational Leadership: Project V.O.I.C.E and Sarah Kay

Screen Shot 2014-10-01 at 07.30.42 pmBy Andrea Hylen, Founder of Heal My Voice

I like to watch inspiring videos and films. They teach me new things and help me stay connected to the things I have learned already. There is a power in the writing and sharing of our stories. TEDtalks are videos of people telling a story.

Last night I found Sarah Kay again. The first time I viewed her TEDtalk was in 2011, when I was leading the first Heal My Voice book program: Fearless Voices: True Stories by Courageous Women.

In her talk, Sarah shares two poems and talks about spoken word poetry and the power of writing a poem to heal something. And she talks about the power of having your story witnessed.

She inspired me in 2011 and again last night. Her talk reminded me of a few things I believe to be true.

*Keep growing and exploring and taking risks and challenging yourself.

*The power of having our stories and words witnessed.

*How we can encourage and learn from each other. (We are ageless in that.)

*The adult poets at the Bowery Club encouraged her 14-year-old voice and she taught them, too. “I really felt that”

*The impact parents can have on fanning the flames of their children’s passions.

Enjoy her TEDTalk here:
Sarah Kay: If I should have a daughter…

Her organization with partners Franny Choi and Phil Kaye. Be inspired by the impact they are having on the world…one word, one student at a time…

What is Feminine Leadership?

Wordle: Feminine Qualities

By Andrea Hylen, Founder of Heal My Voice

Twenty-two women explored this question last year in the 6th Heal My Voice Program.

What is Feminine Leadership?

We set an intention of exploring and releasing old ways of leading that were no longer working and cracking through to discover new ways to lead. We explored our leadership in business, parenting, collaboration and community.

The book of personal stories will be released on October 28 on Amazon. It is called Feminine Voices: True Stories by Women Transforming Leadership

Over the next 31 days, we are going to write blogs about leadership, shine a light on organizations and some writing tips.

Join us and share your voices in the comment sections.

In the on-line community, we began with this question, a year ago: What are some qualities of Feminine Leadership?

Writing: Finding the Rhythm of Your Voice

Screen Shot 2014-07-26 at 7.23.43 AM

By Andrea Hylen, Founder of Heal My Voice

The first time I endeavored to write a short, personal story about my life was for the anthology book of stories by women called, “Conscious Choices: An Evolutionary Woman’s Guide to Life. Even though I had been a journal writer for 20+ years and had participated in book circles with women, I found myself stuck in comparing my writing to others with feelings of being vulnerable and exposed and not good enough to publish my words.

I was stuck in not knowing which story to write, what style to write it in and how to get started.

One day I was driving to New York City to have a short overnight visit with my daughter Mary. It was a three and a half hour drive in the pouring down rain with plenty of alone time in the car. I decided to listen to a book on tape. I had just stopped by the library and picked up an audio copy of Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert. As I listened to her voice and her words for hours, I felt her words so deeply in my heart and soul. She is a professional writer who writes with authenticity about her life and feelings.

Something surprising began to happen as I listened and felt her story. Instead of comparing my writing to hers, I was inspired to tell my own life stories. I was inspired to write from my heart; my way with my voice. I thought to myself, that’s her voice. I want to write from my voice with feelings and passion and connection to my own stories.

Listening to the book on tape inspired me to speak and write and learn how to tell my own stories. I encourage you today to read and listen to stories by other people. Instead of being intimidated by someone’s unique expression, allow them to help you open the door to yours.

Reading the words written by someone else is like listening to music. Open your heart and feel. Let your voice emerge from your soul and find the rhythm of your voice.

I did write my story by climbing into bed with my laptop every night for three weeks and letting the words and the feelings and emotions pour through me. I mentored 44 women to write their stories in the book Conscious Choices. I helped the women find the rhythm of their voices and let go of some formulaic way of writing. Three years later, I became the founder of Heal My Voice. In the first five Heal My Voice books, there are now over 100 vulnerable, powerful, authentic, personal stories and poems written by women who found the rhythm of their voice. We have created a symphony of voices.

Your Voice Matters. Find the rhythm of your voice and write your stories today.
